Insane or Ingenious

There is a big debate on whether Edgar Allan Poe was insane or whether his works were pieces of art. In my opinion, Poe was an amazing author and the reason people don't understand his literature is because they don't make an effort to read it. Yes, his stories have a more advanced vocabulary. Yes, some of his stories are sadistic, gruesome tales. However, I find that this does not make him insane per say, but an even better author.

Because of his terrible experiences as a child, Poe was filled with a lot of sorrow and depression at a young age. He had to suffer the difficulties of having a single mother raise him. Then his mother died and that loss hit him really hard because he was young and didn't have many other people he could really depend on. Next he was separated from his siblings and taken in by people he didn't even know. His adoptive father went on to abusing him and he didn't have very many friends. From his childhood, Poe was an outcast, never properly fitting in anywhere because of his state of mind. In all reality, if anyone had to go through what he went through, they couldn't possibly turn out to be completely normal.

I do not think he was insane, I just think he was able to express his depressing, melancholic feelings through his writing. When one can look beyond what is just written on the paper, when one can infer what the author is trying to really get across, one learns many things. Poe hides many morals and lessons in a lot of his stories and poems. The stories that aren't directly illustrating these things are just showing the reader a little bit more about Poe and his personality and feelings.

The works that Poe opened up in the most are probably his last stories and poems written. Here there is a lot of emotional sadness because of the loss of Poe's wife. It is easy, in these works, to get really attached to the main character and to feel what he is feeling. These works demonstrate the feelings of the narrator but also of the author. One is directly linked to Poe's thought process and his reaction to many situations.

I feel Poe is ingenious when it comes to his writing. He uses imagery, literary devices, symbolism and hidden meanings in such a way that once the readers infer and read between the lines, the story becomes so much more than just a story. It becomes an experience that we can link to our own lives. I encourage anyone who has not read any of Poe's works to start because you are honestly missing out on a lot!

  1. WOW! And here I was thinking Poe was a nut case this whole time! It's really great to find out so much about a person and understand the reasoning behind their insanity within literature. Maybe he was insane, deep down, but you may also be right, maybe he just lived a hard life and was such a genius when it came to his writing that he found such abstract ways of demonstrating the truth behind his life. After a great deal of research I bet someone could determine that a majority of his writing is probably based upon his real life experience, just written in a slightly more... intriguing way I guess... Very interesting blog! I will definitely be around to read more after reading this one! Excellent work Kat ;)

  2. Interesting, I think a lot of people don't really look deep into dark writers and just say that their is something wrong with them. The same goes for music artists and painters, anyone who expresses themselves through an art. I might start to read more Poe one day and actually think deeper into it to see the true genius behind his work.

    1. I agree with you Alex, people like Poe were misunderstood because the way they expressed was so different from everyone else. I think thats why dictators throughout history like Hitler or Stalin have been scrutinized by others just because the way they see the world is different. In our minds it's wrong but in theirs it's right so who is actually misunderstood? Is it us or them?

  3. Wow! I learnt so many things from this post about Poe! He sounds like an inspiration for many people to express their feelings through art and writing. I completely agree with you that a lot of people misunderstand his story lines and symbols. When I first read one of Poe's stories, I was shocked because of how his reading has such a deeper meaning than the words that are on paper. In my opinion, only a true writer and artist can interpret their feelings in such a way as Poe has!

  4. I think every author has their own sense of style and ways of writing. It doesn’t make you insane if you write differently than others. I agree, if one was to go through what Poe went through, I’m sure they would be writing the same way. Everyone has their own way of expressing their feelings and Poe decided to express them through his writing. Very cool blog!

  5. What a compelling look into this disturbed and amazing author. I liked reading the in-depth analysis of his various works, but would have appreciated more links to the works themselves or to recordings of said works.

What is your fascination with this author?
